Although developments in wastewater treatment over recent decades have focused on the biological reactor, the secondary settling tank (SST) also plays a major role in achieving increasingly stringent effluent quality standards. This report collates many of the significant developments that have taken place in SST theory, design, modelling and operation. Earlier SSTs were designed only by empirical hydraulic criteria such as overflow rate, which do not recognize sludge concentration and settleability. Today, there are available not only much improved design procedures but also hydrodynamic models for simulating water and solids distribution and flows in full-scale SSTs. Nine chapters cover a wide range of subjects including: Flocculation and settling behaviour of biological sludges SST performance evaluation protocols Development and evaluation of the different design procedures such as the flux theory and the ATV design rules Developments in and application of one- two- and three-dimensional modelling Experience-based aspects of design and operation of circular, rectangular and vertical SSTs. She's back! Join everybody's favourite beer-swilling, chain-smoking, kangaroo-lurving lunatic as she embarks on her first 'proper' literary excursion. Violence! Time travel! Midgets! Yes, tremble in fear at "Tank Girl: The Novel!" Tank Girl and Booga have launched an all-out assault on the town of Chankers, starting with the church. But what prompted this attack? Could it have something to do with Booga's nightmare vacation there years ago? Well, duh - whaddyou think?Destined to become a literary classic - y'know, like Watership Down or something - and a mainstay of school syllabuses, this is Tank Girl as you've never experienced her before: in attractively justified eight point serif. The Aboveground Steel Storage Tank Handbook I like the summary of regulations in conjunction with industry standards and products. Usually a book covers one or the other. --Wayne Geyer, Executive Vice-President, Steel Tank Institute I think this is a valuable text in that it does a very good job presenting the two types of ASTs. --Darryl J. Butkos, Hydrogeologist and Environmental Engineer The U.S. aboveground storage tank (AST) market will approach $2.0 billion in 1995 and has an annual growth rate of approximately 5 percent. Shop-built ASTs have proliferated over the last 10 years and are replacing the underground tanks that have caused a large percentage of groundwater contamination. Larger field-erected tanks are now found at almost every industrial facility because of their greater reliability and the lessened risk of environmental spills. The Aboveground Steel Storage Tank Handbook discusses the myriad of regulations, codes, and manufacturing standards and shows how they are intertwined. It is the first handbook on aboveground storage tanks that explains the unique differences between field-erected ASTs and shop-built ASTs. The authors have divided the Handbook into four easy-to-understand sections: Markets, Regulations, Standards, and Products. Anyone who finds himself or herself working through the maze of the AST compliance paperwork will find this book to be a great benefit as a single-source reference guide.
Like Raindrops on Water is a glimpse into the future where the world had seen many changes. Thoughts, ideas, cultures and ways of life have changed for the good of all. A revolution has taken place. But instead of a revolution of shooting and violence, it was a change of heart and a change in thinking. In many ways, this has been instigated by a few pioneers through their bold and brave words, thoughts and actions which spread far, like the ripples of raindrops falling on water. Linorio was one such pioneer. But free will ensues and there are signs that destructive human traits are re-emerging. The story is seen through the friendship of the 23 year old Jonathan and Molly who, at 105, is more than 80 years older than her young friend. When Linorio disappears, Molly and Jonathan go in search of him. Their search takes them to a remote and desolate part of the Peruvian Amazon jungle. Here too they find that dark forces still thrive, and that humans can revert to their old ways. For us in the early 21st century, it is a story. It is a hope and a wish for the possibility of a better life for all of us, a chance to re-imagine everything. It is also a reminder of what can happen when we stop being vigilant, and when we take things for granted.
What is the role of elites in shaping foreign policy? Did unaccountable foreign policy elites shape the post-1945 world order? Chatham House and the Council on Foreign Relations were vital in America's shift from isolationism to globalism, and in Britain's shift from Empire to its current pro-American orientation and were also fundamental in engineering public backing for a new world order. Inderjeet Parmar presents new evidence to show how well-organized and well-connected elite think tanks helped to change the world.
